THIBODAUX, La. – After splitting mid-week games at Tulane and at home against Dillard, the Nicholls State University baseball team will host a three-game series against Eastern Illinois (Feb. 23-25).
The action from Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray Didier Field on Friday night and Sunday afternoon will be streamed on ESPN+. Game one and two of the series will begin at 6 p.m. and Sunday's action will begin at 1 p.m.
Nicholls (4-1) began the season last week with a series sweep of Sacred Heart which saw the Colonels score 40 runs. Earlier this week, the Red & Gray narrowly fell to the Green Wave (2-3) on Tuesday night and dominated Dillard (14-2) the following night.
Last weekend, Eastern Illinois (1-2) played a three-game series at Florida A&M where they dropped the first two contests (5-6, 0-4) and won the third (9-8). The Panthers came to Thibodaux for a three-game series in 2021 and they won the series despite being outscored 16-11 on the weekend.
The Colonels currently have five players batting .300 or better. Current SLC Hitter of the Week,
Edgar Alvarez leads the unit (.467) with seven hits including three doubles and two home runs. He has also scored 10 runs scored and tallied six RBI.
Garrett Felix is batting .412 with five RBI, followed by
Basiel Williams (.364),
Narvin Booker Jr. (.333), and
Jaden Collura (.300).
In the Red & Gray bullpen,
Dylan Farley and
Jack Nelson lead the team in strikeouts with eight apiece.
Jacob Mayers has seven strikeouts and has the same WHIP as Nelson (.75).
The Panthers have three players who hit over .300 in their series in Tallahassee. Cole Gober (.600) registered six hits, including one home run, and stole three bases. Lucas Loos (.500) recorded five hits, including one double and one long ball. Michael O'Conor (.308) tallied four hits with one double and one homer. Additionally, the trio has scored nine of the 14 Panther runs this season.
In the bullpen, Tyler Conklin has pitched a team-high six innings and gave up seven hits, six earned runs, and one home run in his action. Jonathon Hanscom has a team-best 4.50 ERA, five strikeouts, and has only allowed three hits. Casey Perrenound has also tallied five strikeouts and has given up five hits.
