HOUSTON, Texas - Leading by a run in the ninth inning, the Nicholls State University baseball team could not clinch the series against HBU as the Huskies rallied with a pair of runs for a walk-off 6-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
Nicholls (17-12, 5-3 SLC) put the tying runner on as
Devin Desandro walked the leadoff batter. Following a sac bunt,
Brandon Andrews took over and allowed a run-scoring single that tied the game. Two batters later, Diego Davila singled to left center for the walk-off win.
The Colonels finished with seven hits and had three go for extra bases.
Xane Washington and
Hunter LeBlanc each homered in the first two innings, putting Nicholls ahead 3-0.
HBU (10-21, 4-4 SLC) scored a run in the second and third innings, but the Colonels answered with a two-run fifth. Alvarez doubled down the right field line for an RBI, then
Jaden Collura brought home a run on a groundout double play.
The Huskies scored two in the bottom half, using RBI singles by Brennen Bales and Caleb Mouton to make the score 5-4 Colonels.
Desandro tossed shutout innings in the sixth, seventh, and eighth before leaving the game in the ninth. He allowed two hits in 3.2 innings but walked three.
Chase Gearing made the start, surrendering four runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
