THIBODAUX, La. – The 2018 Nicholls State University baseball breakdown continues with the outfielders, a position where the Colonels are young but also athletic and versatile.
"With only one returner that saw significant time in 2017, the Colonel outfielders is an inexperienced but exciting group," Nicholls assistant coach
Walt Jones said. "
Chet Niehaus is the veteran in the outfield with
Norry Galjour and
Lee Clark adding some experience to the group. Niehaus has transitioned well from left field to center field and looks to be the leading candidate there. Galjour and Clark have come on strong in preseason action. For a group with only one returning starter, the Colonel outfielders is an exciting group. Freshmen
Xane Washington,
Dane Simon and
Kade Sonnier will all see significant action this season. Junior college transfer
Champ Davison has probably been the most improved outfielder from fall to spring. The Colonel outfielders has great depth with a combination of both athleticism and physicality."
Niehaus started 45 of 51 games last season with 40 coming in left field. Niehaus' speed and superior ability to track flyballs have allowed for a seamless transition to center field. The Hammond native posted the squad's second-best batting average (.303) last season. Clark and Galjour combined for seven starts in the outfield. Clark also started 15 games as designated hitter.
Newcomers Davison, Simon, Sonnier and Washington are all expected to contribute immediately. Davison is a transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coach Community College. Simon, Sonnier and Washington are freshmen from Louisiana-based high schools.
