LAKE CHARLES, La. – Seniors
Hannah Naquin and
Callie Scull, sophomore
Maerys Joseph and freshman
Eleana Callejas earned podium spots in the Nicholls State University track and field's first indoor meet of the season Friday at the McNeese Indoor I.
"We had a great start to the season today," Nicholls head coach
Stefanie Slekis said. "The team is ready to get back to work next week and test themselves against tougher competition in Birmingham."
Naquin claimed the gold in the 800-meter run at the Ralph O. Ward Recreation Complex, finishing in a personal-best 2 minutes, 23.80 seconds. Callejas, making her debut on the track, earned bronze with a 2:26.21.
"Hannah winning the 800m and running a PR that breaks her own No. 10 mark on the Nicholls Indoor All-Time list was a perfect way to begin her senior campaign," Slekis said. "Eleana executed her race plan and closed well to take third in the 800m right off of her high school outdoor personal best."
The Colonels also fared well in the 400m as Joseph and Scull finished 1-2 in the event. Joseph crossed the finish line at 1:00.89 with Scull trailing just behind at 1:01.76.
"Maerys and Callie going first, second in the 400m was especially exciting since that was the fastest both of them have run at a season opener," Slekis said.
Nicholls returns to action Jan. 19 at the Samford University Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
