Houston Astros Sign Christian Correa on Sunday

HOUSTON, Texas Following the conclusion of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft, the Houston Astros announced the signing of Nicholls State University senior catcher Christian Correa on Sunday afternoon.

Correa becomes the fourth Colonel to join an MLB team since Tuesday. He will reunite with right-handed senior pitcher Ryan Deemes, who was drafted by the Astros on Wednesday. The Washington Nationals took left-handed junior pitcher Grant Borne on Tuesday and the Toronto Blue Jays drafted lefty senior relief pitcher Stuart Holmes on Wednesday.

"It's amazing," Correa said. "It's everything I worked for. I just want to thank everyone who has been there through everything in my baseball career. I want to thank everyone at Nicholls that helped me through this process and especially my family for always being there."

Correa was outstanding behind the plate all year with a .985 fielding percentage. He caught 18 base runners stealing and finished with 37 hits, 22 RBIs and nine runs scored in 2015.

"Christian is as good of a defensive catcher as you will find," Head Coach Seth Thibodeaux said. "He will be a good one for a while I think. I'm very proud of him and know he will make the most of his opportunity. He's another senior that had two great years with us, got his degree and will be a professional baseball player. I am happy for him and his family."

Correa helped Nicholls reach several milestones and garner national recognition. The Colonels went on a nine-game tear that was the teams' longest winning-streak since 2005. Nicholls swept its season series against Louisiana-Lafayette for the first time since 1996 and downed the No. 1 LSU tigers at Alex Box Stadium earlier this year. The Colonels also turned in back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since 1992-93. Nicholls' 34 wins this season were the most since 1992 when the program totaled 36 victories.
