Springer Set For NCAA Championships In Oregon

THIBODAUX, La. – After a long season that saw her win multiple individual titles on the year, Nicholls State University junior javelin thrower Jaimee Springer heads to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon this Wednesday at Historic Hayward Field.

A live stream of Wednesday's action will be available through the Pac-12 Digital Network and provided by Oregon Athletics. Live stats of the event will be provided by Flash Results during the meet, with links to both on the front page of GeauxColonels.com.

After placing eighth overall at the NCAA East Prelims two weeks ago by winning her flight in North Carolina, the Lloydminster, Alberta native heads into the 24-person championship event taking place on Wednesday night at the University of Oregon with the 21st best throw of the prelims last week and sits 41st overall in the event in the nation.

As one of 16 newcomers to the championship meet this season, Springer is only one of nine reigning conference champions to compete in the finals this year, and is one of two student-athletes from the Southland Conference.

Becoming only the second student-athlete ever to qualify for a berth in the national championships, Springer can become the first All-American honoree in school history with a strong performance earning first team by finishing in the top eight, second team by finishing in the top 16, as Leslie Bourgeois came close in 2010 finishing just outside of the award criteria. Bourgeois also recorded the highest finish at the championships by finishing 13th that same season.

It's been a year of firsts for the Canada native, claiming her first individual Southland Conference championship in Lake Charles back in May, earning the league's field athlete of the week award twice and earning six individual javelin championships in her breakout junior campaign.

Springer seemed to get stronger as the season progressed, setting, and then breaking, her personal best marks including a new PR of 157 feet, 6 inches in Greensboro two weeks ago, inching ever closer to Bourgeois' school record mark of 161-05 which is seven years old.

The competition will be stiff this weekend with multiple representatives from the power five conferences in the SEC, Pac-12, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12, along with mid-major conferences such as the MAC, Conference USA and Mountain West, among others. The person to beat this week is Stanford's Brianna Bain, who comes into the meet with the best throw in the country at 175-10 and was the runner up at last year's championships.
