Bertot Named to Southland All-Academic First Team

Southland Release

FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University softball senior Ashley Bertot has been named first-team All-Academic, the Southland Conference announced Tuesday morning.

Bertot, a native of League City, Texas, entered the spring with a 3.90 cumulative grade point average in accounting. A two-year starter at second base for the Colonels, Bertot posted the third highest GPA of the 24 honorees.

After being tabbed Southland Newcomer of the Year and First Team last season, Bertot garnered second-team all-conference as a senior, hitting .329 while ranking in the top 10 in the SLC in runs (36), walks (22), stolen bases (12) and assists. The Colonel leadoff hitter, who transferred to Nicholls in 2012 after spending two seasons at the University at Buffalo, led the team with 16 multi-hit games and a team-best 12-game hitting streak.

Bertot's selection gives Nicholls head coach Angel Santiago his second first-team all-academic honoree in as many years. In addition, the Colonels have had at least one player earn all-academic in six straight seasons.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
