LAKE CHARLES, La. –
With the bulk of the team competing Saturday, the Nicholls State University women's track and field team started the 2013 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the first individual title for Jaimee Springer and three runners qualifying for Sunday's finals in Tessni Carruthers, Kryshell Rolle and Jackie White.

The Colonels are currently eighth overall in the team standings with ten points, as Stephen F. Austin currently leads the event with 51 total team points.

Springer, who finished as the runner-up at last year's event, did one better this season and became the fourth Colonel in the last seven years to earn gold at the league's meet with her winning throw of 155 feet, 6 inches, earning the Canada native a new personal record and fifth javelin throw title of the season. Along with a gold medal, Springer earns first team all-conference recognition after being named second team last season.

Jackie White and Tessni Carruthers head into tomorrow's finals as the top two qualifiers in the 800-meter run event, as Carruthers set a new personal best in the event with the best time in heat one clocking in with a mark of 2 minutes, 14.13 seconds, while White took the top spot in heat two with her time of 2:12.06.

Rolle rounded out the finalists for Nicholls, as she qualified in her two signature events in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles. She had the second fastest overall time of the day in the 100 reaching the finish in 14.01 seconds, then followed that up with the third best overall time in the 400 in 1:01.62.

Cymone Hamilton set a new personal record in winning the shot put competition in the heptathlon with her toss of 39 feet, 9.25 inches on Friday. Quadri Newson set a new personal record in the 400-meter dash with her time of 55.77 seconds, moving all the way up to third all-time in the event at Nicholls, while Amalechi Eweni had a personal record jump in the long jump clearing 15 feet, 9 inches.

Nicholls will close out the championships tomorrow, beginning at 10 a.m. with the field events and running events beginning at 3 p.m. at the Cameron Communications Track Complex.
