Cajuns Convert On Opportunities Late To Defeat Nicholls 5-1

Final Stats LAFAYETTE, La. – After pulling out a thrilling win on Tuesday, the Nicholls State University baseball team traveled to Lafayette to take on Ragin Cajuns on Wednesday and had a bevy of chances to pull out the win but only plated one run on the night on eight hits in a 5-1 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

The loss snaps Nicholls' three-game winning streak as the Colonels fall to 6-3 on the year, while ULL improves to 8-2 on the season.

Heading into the eighth with the game still tied, Kelby Langston (0-1) came on and immediately gave up a hit to open the frame and it would only get worse from there giving up four runs on three hits in the inning earning the loss. It was the only time that Louisiana-Lafayette was able to get more than a run across the plate in the game as the Cajuns stranded 11 runners on base during the game.

Nicholls stranded eight runners on base during the course of the game, as the Colonels got hits from six different players on the night. Philip Lyons and Keith Cormier each had two hits in the game for the Colonels, while Mike Barba, Tyler Duplantis, Cody Dufrene and Leo Vargas had the others.

Starting pitcher Grant Borne had a solid first start in a Colonel uniform, going five innings allowing just one run on three hits with five walks and a strikeout, as reliever Justin Sinibaldi gave up just a hit with a walk in his two innings of work.

With ULL striking first, the Colonels went on the offensive and began to slowly chip away at the ULL pitching and finally broke through in the top of the fifth as Tyler Duplantis singled to centerfield to kick off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Zorn moved him over to second, Cody Dufrene hit a screamer to left center scoring the run and tying the game at 1 apiece.

Louisiana-Lafayette got two hits in the opening frame to take the early 1-0 lead and didn't get another hit until the fifth, as the Ragin Cajuns loaded the bases and got to a 3-0 count before flying out to end the inning and keep the game tied heading into the final four innings.

Singles by Lyons and Cormier followed by a throwing error put two runners in scoring position for the Colonels in the very next inning with just one out, but consecutive liners right at defenders ended the inning allowing the Cajuns to escape unscathed in the inning.

Nicholls returns to action this weekend, taking part in the LSU Round Robin beginning on Saturday afternoon, facing Brown University at 2 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
