Kozionov earned the Southland's first POW honors of the season
FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University senior
Dmitry Kozionov was named Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Kozionov, a senior from Izhevsk, Russia, helped lead Nicholls to a 2-1 record in the opening week of the spring season. Moving to the No.1 position, Kozionov earned a pair of straight set victories, defeating Oral Roberts' Fabian Zierleyn 6-3, 6-3 in the conference opener before going on to defeat the 86th-ranked player in the country, Artus Kazijevs (SMU) 6-4, 6-4. Kozionov's only loss in singles came against Texas A&M, which is ranked 26th in the nation.
In doubles, Kozionov also picked up a win, teaming up with
Damian Despotovski for an 8-3 win versus ORU. He almost notched another victory against SMU, but the duo was edged 8-7.
The Colonels will be back on the courts this weekend, with two matches at Southern Miss. Along with playing the host Golden Eagles, Nicholls is slated for a matchup against Jacksonville State.
