Jeremy Hill had three of the Colonels' six hits on the night in a 3-0 loss to Texas State
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University and Texas State baseball teams played another close contest in the series opener Friday night, but three runs by the Bobcats over the length of the game coupled with a holding the Colonels to just six hits on the night sealed Nicholls' fate in a 3-0 loss.
Nicholls (20-21, 8-14 SLC) only had three runners in scoring position on the night, with
Jeremy Hill having two of those chances as he finished the night with half of the Colonels hits going 3-for-4, while
Beau Faulk,
Blake Bergeron and
David Zorn had the other three.
Seth Webster (5-4) did everything he could to keep Texas State (24-16, 12-10) at bay, and at one point had retired ten consecutive Bobcat batters in order, but the visitors found a way to at least get one run across in the board in the second, seventh and ninth innings. Webster finished the night going 8.2 innings giving up all three runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts, while his counterpart in Travis Ballew went the distance scattering six hits, tying a career high in strikeouts with 12.
The Bobcats struck first in the second inning, using a two out single to drive in the first run of the game to go up 1-0.
Hill was the first batter to advance to scoring position, reaching second on a passed ball after hitting a single to left-center to open the bottom of the fourth. He advanced to third on a grounder that put two outs on the board, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Hill singled with two outs in the sixth, and began running when Faulk singled to right field advancing to third, as the ball sailed over the third base dugout allowing Faulk to advance to second on the error. But a swinging strikeout in the very next at bat ended the inning.
Texas State scored another run in the seventh, using two hits to drive in another run, taking on a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats scored their third run of the game on a double down the left field line to score a runner from second for the final run of the game.
Game two of the series begins on Saturday at 2 p.m.
