Colonels Hold First Scrimmage; Tillou’s Maniacs Draws Many

THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University football team held its first intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday in John L. Guidry Stadium, suiting up in full pads in front of over 300 fans.

The squad worked mainly on game situations with the offense competing against the defense, and also fitting in special teams work. Referees were present for the scrimmage, and officiated the practice like a real game.

“It was good to have a nice contingent of people in the stands today. It added an extra element to our practice, creating more of game-like atmosphere,” said Head Coach Charlie Stubbs. “We are making progress with many individuals stepping up and making plays on both sides of the ball. We must continue to improve in each and every practice.”

The team also conducted its first ever 'Tillou's Maniacs' Youth Clinic, which was held after practice for children ages 7-12. Over 60 boys and girls from the community came out and took part in the free clinic.

“It was a great event, and it was hard to tell who enjoyed it more, our student-athletes or the children participating,” added Stubbs. “We are thankful that we had such a good turnout. We are looking forward to seeing those future Colonels at our games this season.”

The youth clinic featured all the coaches and student-athletes teaching basic fundamentals at each position. At the end of the 45-minute clinic, all the children were awarded Popsicles to cool down from the harsh heat.

The Colonels will practice tonight with special teams emphasis, and will pick up on the grass practice fields on Monday morning. The team will workout in full pads, and continue to prep for the season opener at San Diego State on Sept. 4.
